I was going through a few of the blogs that I follow and while going a fellow believer and blogger I noticed a common theme. The theme isn’t something that was upon first glance something that was all that unique. I paused to reflect. As I clicked through the pages and posts it was apparent to me and inspired me to begin this post.
True enough anyone can say anything online behind the anonymity of the internet and I’m very hesitant to co-sign on anything. As I combed through the brother’s site (which I may link after permission) I felt a sincerity in expression of devotion to God through the Lord Jesus Christ. Preacher’s specifically and believers in general let’s be careful not to try the bait & switch.
But Liv4Christ4ever it’s for their good. I hear you and I know that we need Jesus more than our next breath. Let me ask you a question. Is it possible to preach the truth starting with a lie? Depends you say…Yeah on who’s “truth” you intend on preaching I say. Jesus said a little leaven leavens the whole lump. The little lie in the beginning begins to taint all the good that previously surrounded it. So you may be wondering what lie is he talking about that we God fearing, bible believing, pastors and believers are telling. Well I’m glad you asked.
Well I’m not going into all the details because somethings are done ignorantly and the same things are intentionally done by the wolves in sheep clothing. In some cases, perhaps most of the things done ignorantly, are taught by those wolves. Perhaps they are imitating those wolves, enamored by the elegance of their faux wool that masks their true intentions. In any case “it’s gotten all up in my craw” and I can’t hold my peace because it’s offensive.
It’s the prosperity gospel. Now to be clear for the pious and folks that esteem their lack as a badge of godliness I don’t have a problem with having money or abundance. Our God does own literally everything and is free to disperse according to His pleasure. Contrary to the opposing sides godliness is not determined in the lack or abundance of material wealth. We followed the preachers that had the biggest congregations, catchiest sermon titles, or most celebrities acquaintances. Again I’m not speaking against megachurches, creative titles or famous social circles. I’m talking about using a lie in order to draw people to preach the truth to. The bait & switch tactic is deployed by many, and for many reasons, but all are self-serving by the one deploying it.
In other words if we tell people that God will give or fix anything in their life, just to get them to come to church or prayer meeting, then we aren’t really helping them. Perhaps we are just as self serving as the slimey salesman or deceptive advertisement. Tell me do you really think that an ALL Holy God would really use a con man as an ambassador? Well I DON’T. He’ll use and ex-con or ex-conman or an ex-anything but not while they are practicing sin (remember practice makes perfect). My pastor says “You can’t bring a worldy tactic into a Godly situation” and I agree. We have the GOLD! So why would we bait with the fools gold? The gospel is the GOLD! Scripture refers to this Good News as a pearl of great price that a man sold all that he had to buy it. I believe that’s key. He sold out. He gave up the old life to obtain the new. This life is eternal and everlasting. Never forget, that’s what Christ died for. I mean the Lord repated himself verbatim “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Maybe we glaze over it because we’ve heard so often. Truly, that is abundance, because without Christ we have no hope. We at best could amass a wealth of vanity only for someone else to take it over upon our eventual demise. Sadly, without Christ no amount of wealth attained could pay the penalty for a life of sin or one sin for that matter. So after this vapor called life is dissipated, we slip into eternity, where truly it all really begins.
It’s Heaven or Hell no in between. In the words of my brother (and fellow blogger) God’s got it. The “IT” is the cure to the disease call SIN. This disease is common to all in the human race. The cure is belief in Jesus and this action (not merely thought) provoking belief is the salvation of the soul. So although God can do this and that to ease their temporary discomfort why would we speak to that point when it’s obvious that peace with God is the real issue? How can we call it evangelism if we promise them anything and everything except peace with God through faith in Jesus to pack the building? How can we hold our head down, looking up to the the POOR rich and never share the Gospel because of their vast material possessions or our lack of? In the words of my pastor ” No GAMES, No GADGETS, Just the GOSPEL! no magic shows no tricks”. It may not be popular anymore but the preaching of the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ is how the early church grew. It’s also the only way to add to the Body of Christ because packing the building doesn’t necessarily cut it.
No need to bait & switch. Just tell them the truth. Remember the truth (God’s truth) makes them free. It’s like unlocking the prison or better yet handing them the key. From there it’s their choice whether or not they choose Christ and walk in deliverance.
Anyways I love y’all and hope this helps someone sell out for the Gospel. My prayer is to meet all of you in Heaven for the biggest party/family reunion of all time. Until then checkout some of the content. We have plenty of posts and some audios. I hope to complete the Tale of two Sauls series soon.
