After getting to work this morning the details of Dylann Roof’s manifesto were given to me. After he had been arrested last week I hadn’t kept abreast with the latest developments in the Charleston Church shooting. At that time it was apparent to me that this kid wasn’t just a racist but anti-christian as well. Today after getting some of the details from a manifesto purportedly written by Dylann Roof I felt it l important to address some points. But before I do, know, this is not political platform. Although it seems that in every major crisis we must pick a side based on what the talking heads tell us to think. At Liv4Christ4ever we will present from our stated goal on the about us page.
1. What does the bible have to say about tragedies and wickedness occurring in the world today?
Mat 18:7 Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
Wickedness will increase until the coming of our Lord. He already said that so it shouldn’t come as a shock.
John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
Luk 11:23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.
2. What should the believers response be?
Our response should be to PRAY! Prayer and Fasting through humility confessing our own sins before those of the wicked. Consider this prayer by Nehemiah to the God of Heaven. As you read know that this prayer was immediately after hearing of tragedy the terrible state of his people.
Nehemiah 1:4-11 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven, And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned.
We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses. Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there. Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand. O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.
3. Should the believer feel obligated to answer the inflammatory questions that follow this type of tragedy. No this line of questioning is used to distract from our true power which is prayer from a position of right standing before God. However when genuine concerns and questions arise from those that desire the truth of God be ready and prayerful in your response.
1Peter 3:15-16 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
Mat 10:19-20 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
